2013 Yamaha Fazer
The Yamaha Fazer for India, the semi-faired kin of the Yamaha FZ is a motorcycle which brought joy for the faired bike lovers. A simple yet stylish looking bike that has gone ahead and stolen the hearts of many. Yamaha clearly wanted this to be the tourers choice and have done a lot of tweaks and updates over the years to keep it fresh but then does it have what it takes to be the best at what it does?
Engine and Performance
The Yamaha Fazer gets the same 14HP, 153cc engine from the FZ which is without doubt excellently refined and there is absolutely no change to it. This means that, as in the case of the FZ, the entire ride quality is best for city commuting at 60kmph mark. Beyond this, you have a sensation of riding an underpowered machine. The gearshifts are butter smooth and have precision to it even after long hours of riding. As its naked kin, the Fazer takes its own sweet time to get to the 120 kmph mark, all the while screaming its lungs out, and if you have the patience to wait so long, only then do you notice the help provided by the half fairing with some good wind deflection. However, what impressed us is the kind of acceleration that this mill produces between 3000 the 6500 RPM range, thanks to the throttle position sensor that varies the ignition timing and provides accurate and precision sparks, the Yamaha Fazer is truly alive only in this range. With a pillion on-board, we faced a severe lack of power as we did in FZ and since it's got a rather narrow power band you end up needing a lot gear shifts. We got a combined mileage of 38kmpl for the Yamaha Fazer.
Look and Feel and Build Quality
The Yamaha Fazer with its stylish looks gets a centum on the score sheet. This is the only semi-faired bike under 1lac for an Indian consumer and it also gives tough competition to subjective ideas of styling as that of Honda CBR 150R. The twin headlamps of Fazer look very similar to that of earlier Ninja 650R and has a striking appeal when you look at it. The fairing might be seen as an extrusion initially but, once you are accustomed to this looks you will not complain. In our opinion, a slightly redesigned rear end would have done wonders for this bike. But for now, yes, both FZ and Fazer share the same tail section with that 140 section rear tire, and while it does not look bad, it could have been way better.
While the riding ergonomics are same as that of the FZ, the feel of this bike is quite different, the half fairing definitely gives you a, dare we say 'a bike bike feel'. The good thing is the fairing does not hamper the movement much, but the fairing mounted mirrors make the bike super wide and a slight pain in tight traffic. The plastics on the bike are of top-notch quality and this bike also receives the plastic fuel tank as in FZ. Build quality is supreme without any vibrations from the fairing or engine. It is one smooth ride from home to destination and back!
Handling and Braking
The Yamaha Fazer gives the rider a semi sporty yet relaxed seating position and a good view ahead beyond the fairing. Further, the tires allow you to push this machine through any kind of road with pride. The grippy tires are not only planted but are quite comfortable for prolonged rides in traffic, thanks to the medium compound rubber. The comfort is further enhanced by the monoshock suspension that Yamaha employs in this machine. In both the city and the highway, it is a good handler and it is pretty easy to change the direction of motion without any fuss thanks to the wide handle bars, a boon when you wish to avoid that unexpected obstacle on road. The windblasts at high speeds are reduced considerably due to the tall front visor and hence the comfort on highways is much better than on the FZ. The braking department is headed by a 267 mm disc at the front, which gives a spongy feel just as that on the FZ, but we find it to be sufficient enough for the kind of speeds that this machine is capable of. On the other end of the bike, the rear drum brake is sharp and has a very good bite to it.
Accessories and Key features
The new Fazer also receives the tweaks that were made to the FZ after customer feedback. The seats are widened now, and the rear mudguard is made friendlier to both the pillion and other vehicles following the machine. The pillion also is gifted with wider grab rails for a secured and comfortable grip. This bike also received a kick start addition due to the bad electronics that were a problem in the previous generation of the bike. The digital meter shows information such as speed, RPM and fuel level. It has an orange backlit background to it and is easy to read it in low light but is not bright enough for a sunny day. The twin headlight system is almost perfect with its strong reflectors and had it come with a 55 W setup, night or day this bike would have chugged along just fine. Available Yamaha Fazer colour options include Steak Red, Getaway Blue, Rising Red and Milestone Black.
Value for Money
The Yamaha Fazer price is Rs.78,385/- ex showroom New Delhi and costs about 6 grand more that the than FZ. It is the only 150cc semi faired bike but it still promises admirable looks and build quality. It definitely is on the costlier side but what you get for the price is a machine that will withstand the test of time. Spares are decently priced and service costs are pretty similar to its competitors.
Final Verdict
The Yamaha Fazer definitely scored top marks when it comes to the build quality and the looks department. The company also has been proactive on feedback and complaints while most manufacturers turn a blind eye and deaf ears to such things in today's world. It's a perfect city bike for the younger college crowd where looks and off the life performance matters. The fuel efficiency and the narrow power band is probably the only let down on this bike, but the Yamaha Fazer thoroughly makes up for that in build quality and ride experience. Oh yes, Yamaha please make a 250 version of this.
